West Bengal: Fire destroys chemical factory in Kolkata, security guard killed

Kolkata: On Saturday, the first day of the new year 2022, a huge fire broke out in the warehouse of a chemical factory in the Kaikhali area near Kolkata airport.

A large part of the chemical factory was burnt to ashes in this terrible fire and the surrounding factories have also been damaged. Meanwhile, a security guard of the factory has also been burnt to death in this accident.

According to the police, the fire started around 11 in the morning. The warehouse contained paints, thinners and other flammable items, which caused the fire to spread rapidly. With the help of 18 fire engines, after many hours of hard work, the fire was brought under control at about two o’clock in the afternoon. The fire had become so severe and there were narrow alleys which made it very difficult to put out.

NDRF also had to be called

The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) also had to be called in to control the situation. State Fire Minister Sujit Bose also reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. Officials said that smoke was seen rising from the warehouse of the factory at around 11 in the morning. After this, the locals informed the fire department.

First five fire engines arrived. But, being a flammable substance, the fire spread rapidly. The whole area was filled with black smoke. A total of 18 fire engines were dispatched to the spot. Firefighters and NDRF personnel together managed to control the fire. Meanwhile, after the fire broke out, a security guard got trapped in the warehouse, killing him.

His body was recovered after the fire was extinguished. The name of the deceased is Kanhai Kumar Santra (52). He worked as a security guard in this factory for many years.

Trouble extinguishing fire due to flammable substance

Eyewitnesses reported that the factory had drums full of many flammable substances. As soon as the fire started, there was an explosion with a terrible sound. This made it very difficult for the firefighters to put out the fire.

There was an atmosphere of panic in the area due to the fire. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed yet. Firefighters estimate the fire was caused by a short circuit. The police have joined in the investigation. The locals also allege that there were no fire safety and rescue arrangements in the factory.
