Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has slammed the Election Commission for giving clean chit to the CISF in the firing incident at Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar district which led to the deaths of four people.
Mamata Banerjee accused the paramilitary forces of working for the BJP and claimed that the firing incident was a deliberate act against the TMC.
“They are saying that the CISF fired in self-defence. What self-defence? Not a single soldier was injured,” Mamata Banerjee said.
The TMC chief also alleged that the villagers who had attacked the CISF personnel were unarmed.
“The villagers were unarmed. Even if they were attacked, the CISF should have fired below the waist, or in the legs. Why did they shoot into their chests?” the TMC chief said.
“The CISF sprayed bullets at the crowd. That is why all bullet injuries are in heads and necks. the CISF is intended to guard industrial areas. But they have been posted on election duty. They are not trained for that,” she added.
In Cooch Behar district, 5 people were killed during the fourth round of the West Bengal Election 2021 on Saturday. Elections have been postponed following the firing at booth number 126 in Sitalkuchi and voting has been ordered again. The Election Commission has also called for a report of violence.
After the incident, Cooch Behar SP Debashish Dhar said that a man was ill and fainted, he was undergoing treatment in front of the booth. At that time, rumors spread that the CISF had beaten him up.
Around 300-350 men from the neighbouring village attacked the CISF personnel. They tried to snatch the rifles from the CISF personnel and attempted to enter the booth. 4 local villagers have died in this incident. Their ages range from 22-25 years.
Along with this, the CRPF has also issued a clarification about the incident in Cooch Behar, informing that neither CRPF was deployed outside booth number 126 at Sithalakuchi in Cooch Behar nor are they involved in any way in this incident.
