Watch: Golden scaled live pangolin seized from poacher in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: People have weird wishes when it comes to choosing a pet. In a bizarre incident, a person in Odisha was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police for having a live pangolin at his place.

The police informed that the person, a wildlife criminal in the Balangir district of Odisha, was going to have a deal of this pangolin with a poacher.

“Our team got information yesterday that a wildlife criminal was having live pangolin and he was going to have a deal of this pangolin with a poacher. Immediately, our team reached the spot and apprehended the accused Ajit Kumar Budek,” ANI quoted Teja Raja Patel, STF SP saying.

Patel further informed that the scaled animal has been seized and has been handed over to forest officials.

Giving details Patel said they have recovered and seized a total of 25 Leopard skins, 13 elephant tusks, 2 deer skins, 10 live pangolins and more than 16 kg pangolin scales since 2020.

The police officer also informed that the team has arrested a total of 56 wildlife criminals in the state including one arrested recently.

According to WWF, pangolins are the only mammals who are wholly-covered in scales which they use to protect themselves from predators in the wild. If under threat, a pangolin will immediately curl into a tight ball and will use their sharp-scaled tails to defend themselves.
