Raman Jha, New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh Police took Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra into detention in order to prevent them from going to meet the gang rape victim’s family in Hathras on Thursday.

The convoy of the Congress leaders was stopped at the Yamuna Expressway. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was pushed to the ground and lathi-charged while he and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were marching on the highway between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Rahul and Priyanka’s convoy was stopped at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida, but they set out on foot to meet the victim’s family.

However, after some time, the Uttar Police Police tried to stop him from even walking. Rahul Gandhi was allegedly pushed during the ensuing confusion and he fell down. After he was stopped by the Uttar Pradesh Police, hundreds of his supporters, including Rahul Gandhi, sat on the road.

Both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were later taken into custody by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

“The police pushed me, lathi-charged me and threw me to the ground. I want to ask if Modi ji can walk in this country? Can no normal person walk? Our vehicle stopped Gone, so we started walking,” Rahul Gandhi said.

Before the visit of Congress leaders, the UP administration banned large ceremonies and imposed barricades on the borders citing the coronavirus pandemic.
