Uttar Pradesh: 10 more test positive for Zika virus in Kanpur, tally mounts to 89

Government Hospitals across Kanpur have sounded an alert and intensified surveillance under its infectious disease control campaign to identify cases of infection, including Zika virus disease, in the early stages.

Lucknow: Ten more people have tested positive for Zika virus in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. With the fresh cases, the total tally has gone up to 89, Chief medical officer of Kanpur City, Dr. Nepal Singh said.

As per reports, among those recently infected with the virus are three are Air Force personnel, two are women and men. The first case of Zika virus was reported in Kanpur on October 23 when an Indian Air Force (IAF) warrant officer tested positive. 

Zika, a mosquito-borne virus, spreads through the bite of an infected Aedes species of mosquito, which bites during the day. Symptoms of Zika virus are mild fever, rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise or a headache.

With the number of fresh cases increasing every passing day, Uttar Preadesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had instructed officials to speed up sanitisation work.

A case of Zika virus has been reported in Kannauj district of the state. The CMO said the first case of the mosquito-borne disease was reported in a 45-year-old male staying at Shivrajpur village of Kanpur.
