New Delhi: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defense Mark Asper has arrived in India on Sunday for a 2 + 2 dialogue between India and the US.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh welcomed US Secretary of Defence Mark Esper. He was given the Guard of Honor by the army. The visit of the two US ministers to South Asian countries is considered to be very important just before the US presidential election. The two US ministers will have a meeting with Foreign Minister, S Jaishankar, and Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh.

 

What is 2 + 2 meeting?

Actually, meetings between two ministers of two countries are 2 + 2 meetings. It was drafted by Japan, after which it has been adopted by many countries. The meeting promotes high-level dialogue for defense cooperation. The first 2 + 2 talks between India and the US took place in September 2018 while the second one took place in December 2019.

A number of issues can be discussed between the two ministers of the two countries. The most important topic would be India and China border dispute. This topic and other strategies would be discussed in this meeting.

In addition, there might be an agreement on the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement for Geospatial Cooperation (BECA). This will be important to increase India’s military strength.

Along with this, many topics could be discussed in the meeting, including the purchase of defense equipment, China’s increasing tactics in the Indo-Pacific region, terrorism, coronavirus, rules for H-1B visas.
