UP: Gangrape accused shot by police as he tried to flee

New Delhi: One of the four men who have been accused in the gangrape case of a Class 10 student in Meerut was shot by police as he and his accomplice were trying to flee while being taken to the court.

Lakshman and Vikas were arrested earlier today and were bein taken to court when they snatched a pistol from one of the policemen guarding them. Just when they were trying to escape, a policeman, in his attempt to stop, directed a shot at one of them. The two other accused in the case are still on run.

The two were then pinned down near Kaspad village. According to the information shared by the police personnel, Lakhan opened fire, and was then shot in his leg by the cops’ return fire. He is now being treated at a local hospital.

“Today both accused were being taken to court, when they escaped by grabbing the gun of a Police Inspector. A combing operation was launched… the accused opened fire on police. We returned fire and Lakhan was shot in his leg,” Keshav Kumar, the Superintendent of Police (Rural), said.

The gangrape took place in Meerut on Thursday by four men. The relatives have said that she was forced to consume a poisonous substance that led to her death. She was rushed to hospital but died during the treatment.

As per the FIR report filed by her guardian, she left home at around 3.30 pm and returned by 5.15 pm, when she told her parents about the rape and assault.

“As soon as we received a complaint, we registered a case and went to the scene. We found a suicide note at the home of the girl, which names a man called Lakhan and others. Two accused have been arrested. The main accused – Lakhan – used to go attend a tuition class with the girl,” Police said.

Following the incident, Samjwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav took a jibe at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and suggested that he should spend more time in preventing crimes in his state than campaigning for BJP in poll-bound states.

“News of the kidnapping, gangrape and poisoning of a student in Uttar Pradesh’s Sardhana (Meerut) is extremely sad… If star pracharakji (star campaigner) gets some free time… please consider this too. A lot of women have been tortured…,” he tweeted in Hindi.
