New Delhi: The Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif starrer cop-action drama “Sooryavanshi” will not release on April 30 as earlier scheduled by the makers. This comes as covid situation in Maharashtra grows worrisome with the state imposing night curfew and weekend lockdown, beginning from today.
“Team Sooryavanshi postpones the release of the film. The Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Uddhav Thackeray had a discussion with director Rohit Shetty yesterday. In the meeting, Mr. Uddhav Thackeray appreciated Rohit Shetty as he took the brave and difficult decision of postponing Sooryavanshi owing to the current COVID situation in the state,” a statement issued by the makers of the Rohit Shetty directorial read.
Film trade analyst Girish Johar also tweeted on Monday to inform that the release of the film has been pushed indefinitely. “Confirmed. #Sooryavanshi postponed indefinitely!!” he wrote.
The film marks Akshay Kumar’s entry in the Rohit Shetty cop universe. The actor will be seen as a DSP, while Katrina Kaif will play his love interest. The duo has previously worked in a number of blockbusters including Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Namaste London and Welcome among others. Sooryvanshi will bring the pair back together after nine years. Talking about Akshay, Katrina had earlier said, “Akshay is one of the most hardworking actors I know. In fact, I learnt so much from him – the dedication, the punctuality. It also helps that he has a great sense of humour.”
The film was originally scheduled to release on March 24, 2020, but was postponed indefinitely in the wake of the pandemic. The makers then decided on new release date a year later as covid cases in the country fell drastically. However, with the country now reporting over 1 lakh case in one day, the film has again been postponed.
Sooryavanshi also features Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn in special roles.
