Vladimir Putin’s term as the president of Russia is set to expire in 2024, and he could remain head of the Russian government for another two terms under constitutional amendments made during his presidency.

The Kremlin on Friday described the resolution in the US Congress as “absurd” and described it as “US intervention” in the internal affairs of Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the United States (US) has always officially interfered in the internal affairs of other countries. Peskov said it was up to the Russians to choose the president of Russia.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Dzhabarov, the deputy head of Russia’s upper house’s international affairs committee, warned on Friday that US-Russia relations would end if the controversial resolution was passed in the US Congress.

In April, incumbent Russia president Vladimir Putin had signed a law stating that the head of the Russian government would have two more chances to win office. More than 77 per cent of those who took part in the referendum last summer voted in favor of amending the constitution. The amendment grants the President of the Russian Federation two consecutive terms of six years each.

According to the release, the resolution claims that irregularities in Russia’s elections have kept Putin in power and that it would be illegitimate for him to remain in office after 2024. The end of the current term in 2024 paves the way for Vladimir Putin to become the president of Russia again.
