New Delhi: Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last on Sunday morning at the age of 92.

PM Narendra Modi is expected to arrive in Mumbai today evening to pay his last respects to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Several high-profile politicians including Sharad Pawar and Raj Thackeray arrived at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital soon after the news of Lata Mangeshkar’s death was announced.

Soon after the news of Lata Mangeshkar’s death, a heavy police force was deployed outside Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, where the legendary singer was being treated.

Maharashtra minister Aditya Thackeray has arrived at Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital, where Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last on Sunday morning.

After her death, Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating the singer at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, issued a statement. He revealed that Lata Mangeshkar passed away due to miltiple organ failure. “It is with profound grief that we announce the sad demise of #LataMangeshkar at 8:12am. She has died because of multi-organ failure after more than 28 days of hospitalisation post #COVID19,” Dr. Samdani informed.

Two-day national mourning will be observed in memory of the legendary singer.  The National flag to fly at half-mast for two days, as a mark of respect. 

The singer was admitted to the ICU with mild symptoms of Covid19. She was also diagnosed with pneumonia and was recovering slowly. She was put off the ventilator on January 28 after she showed some signs of improvement. However, her health condition deteriorated again on February 5 and was put on ventilator support again.

Lata Mangeshkar’s demise was confirmed by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

“The country’s pride and music world’s Shirmor Swar Kokila Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar ji’s demise is very sad. My heartfelt tribute to the holy soul. Her passing is an irreparable loss to the country. She was always an inspiration to all the music seekers,” Gadkari tweeted after he visited Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. “Lata didi was an intense patriot. 

Bollywood actors too paid tribute to the legendary singer including Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Urmila Matondkar, Vishal Dadlani, Madhur Bhandarkar, Bhumi Pednekar and more. 

The Bharat Ratna awardee was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia and coronavirus in January.

Lata Mangeshkar started professional singing at the age of 13. She recorded her first song in 1942 and in her career spanning seven decades, Lata Mangeshkar recorded over 30,000 songs.

She was the eldest sister of Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
