RIP Deep Sidhu: All about Punjabi actor who hit headlines during farmers' protest

New Delhi: Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu, who had hit headlines during the farmers’ protest, died in a road accident near Sonipat in Haryana on Tuesday. According to Haryana Police, the accident took place on Western Peripheral Expressway near Pipli Toll plaza. Police said the actor rammed his car into a standing truck near Pipli toll on Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi offered his condolences to Deep Sidhu’s family. In a tweet, CM Channi said: “Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of renowned actor and social activist, #DeepSidhu. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and fans”.

Who was Deep Sidhu?

Deep Sidhu was a Punjabi actor, filmmaker, and activist who was born in 1984 to a Punjabi family in Muktsar, Punjab. Sidhu came into the limelight after he won the Kingfisher Model Hunt and later took part in Grasim Mr. India and became Grasim Mr. Personality and Grasim Mr. Talented. Because he could not connect with the world of modelling, he started practising as a lawyer with Sahara India Pariwar as a legal advisor. He was also the legal head of Balaji Telefilms for three and half years.

Sidhu in the 2019 general elections also entered politics and campaigned for Gurdaspur BJP MP Sunny Deol. His first film appearance was in 2015 with ‘Ramta Jogi’, however, he achieved fame through his 2018 release ‘Jora Das Numbria’.

Deep Sidhu and Red Fort violence case

Deep Sidhu was arrested on February 9 last year on charges of inciting protesters during the Republic Day tractor rally organised by farmers against the Centre’s farm laws.  Sidhu was later granted bail in April but was arrested on the same day in another case related to the Republic Day tractor rally violence. The Delhi Police had filed a 3,224-page chargesheet against Deep Sidhu in May last year in connection with the tractor rally violence.
