New Delhi: Vithalbhai Patel, the first elected president of Central Legislative Assembly, was famously known for his impartial, dignified and uprighteous nature. Today, the nation remembers him on his death anniversary.

Vithalbhai Patel was born on September 27, 1873, in Gujarat. He helped make legislative assembly an effective platform where states, centre, and the people of India, through their chosen members, can decide the country’s fate.

He was a philanthropist, politician, lawyer, freedom fighter, and a true patriot. During the freedom struggle of India, he co-founded Swaraj Party and became Deputy leader. Patel, who was the elder brother of ‘Iron Man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was a politician who fought against British rule. His contributions in Indian politics and freedom struggle are great but they are comparatively known lesser to all.

He was the first elected President of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925 and was re-elected in 1927. He was instrumental in laying down well-defined rules, regulations, practices and procedures for the smooth conduct of the business of the House.  A bold defender of the rights and privileges of members, he succeeded in his efforts of creating a separate office for the Legislative Assembly, independent of and unconnected with the Government, in 1928.

Vithalbhai Patel died on October 22, 1933 in Geneva, Switzerland due to his declining health.
