Kanpur: Rachin Ravindra made his test debut for Blackcaps on Thursday against India in Green Park Stadium, Kanpur. But what is special about him is his name which is inspired by two Indians cricket legends.

Rachin’s initials ‘Ra’ are inspired by Team India’s current head coach Rahul Dravid, while the ending, ‘chin’, is taken from the name of Master-Blaster first name Sachin.

Rachel was presented his debut cap ahead of the first test of India and New Zealand in the two-match series in Kanpur. Though Ravindra was part of the Kiwis squad in the World Test Championship that defeated India earlier this year but this is when he got the opportunity to make the debut.

The 22-years-old has now joined the likes of  Deepak Patel, Ish Sodhi, Jeetan Patel, Jeet Raval, Ajaz Patel, Ronnie Hira, and Tarun Nethula as Indian-origin cricketers to play for the Black Caps.

Ravindra’s father, Ravi Krishnamurthy, is a software system architect, and he moved to New Zealand in the 1990s. Ravi is the founder of the very fond of Hutt Hawks Club there, which brings players over to India every summer. Being fond of cricket himself, Ravi also played the sport in Bengaluru. 

With the Hutt Hawks team, Rachin has been visiting India annually since 2011 to play the red ball cricket across Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

The talented all-rounder has played six T20Is for the Black Caps. He made his international debut against Bangladesh earlier this year in a five-match series, which New Zealand eventually lost 2-3.
