New Delhi: Droupadi Murmu, the National Democratic Alliance’s presidential candidate, is receiving applause from across the country. In addition to the politicians, other celebrities are congratulating her in advance. If elected, Murmu will be the country’s first tribal president. Murmu was the first governor to serve a full five-year term after Jharkhand was formed. Murmu’s personal life, on the other hand, was fraught with ups and downs.
Murmu began her career as a councillor after graduating from Rama Devi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. She was elected as the first councillor in the Rairangpur district of Odisha’s Nagar Panchayat. Following this, she was elected to the Mayurbhanj Assembly seat twice (in 2000 and 2009). Murmu has also served as a minister in Odisha’s coalition government of the BJP and the BJD.
Droupadi Murmu’s political career was launched when she was appointed governor of Jharkhand in 2015. Murmu’s personal life, on the other hand, was fraught with ups and downs. Droupadi Murmu is a member of the Santhali tribe. Shyam Charan Murmu was her husband. Droupadi Murmu and Shyam Charan Murmu had three children. They had two sons and one daughter, but Murmu’s husband and both sons died. Murmu’s family currently includes a daughter.
According to media reports, Murmu’s second son Laxman Murmu died mysteriously in 2009 after being discovered unconscious on his bed and rushed to a private hospital. He was later taken to a hospital in the state capital of Bhubaneswar, where he was declared dead.
According to another media report, Murmu announced in 2016 that she would donate her eyes in the Run of Vision programme organised by Kashyap Medical College in Ranchi. Murmu, who has always been involved in social work, was also awarded the Neelkanth Award for Outstanding Legislator by the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2007.
