Pakistan: Embarrassment for Imran Khan as CPEC head charged with corruption

Islamabad: Retired Lieutenant General Asim Bajwa, who was posted as Special Advisor to the Pakistani Prime Minister, has resigned from his post. 

Lieutenant General Aseem Bajwa has been charged with serious corruption allegations. However, he will continue to serve as the head of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Speaking to Pakistani media, Aseem Bajwa has announced his resignation. Hours after the resignation of former Pakistan army chief Lt Gen Asim Bajwa, his media team denied the allegations of corruption. Aseem Bajwa said that following the instructions of his family, he decided to step down as Special Adviser. He said that I have decided to put all my energy into CPEC, because we thought that at present the CPEC Authority needs a lot of attention.

Aseem Bajwa, considered extremely close to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has said that there are many other qualified people in the government’s information wing, so he will focus his attention on CPEC. He said that an excellent team is being formed regarding CPEC and the entire cabinet is focused on the multi-billion dollar project. On the corruption charges, Aseem Bajwa said that I have all the documents related to the property. As a Pakistani citizen I am ready to give money trail, papers or any kind of evidence on any platform.

Allegations of corruption

While holding the post of President of Pakistan Army and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Bajwa has been accused of creating wealth of billions of rupees. He has created 99 companies and 133 Papa John Pizzas restaurants in four countries, trafficking from the country. According to the report, the empire of Bajwa’s family is spread over 4 countries. There has been a stir in Pakistan after this report came out.
