Padma awards announced: Padma Vibhushan to former Uttar Pradesh CM Kalyan Singh

New Delhi: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and veteran politician Kalyan Singh will receive the prestigious Padma Vibhushan posthumously. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday.

Kalyan Singh has been selected for the prestigious award for his contribution in field of Public Affairs. Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.

Kalyan Singh is remembered as forming the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) first government in the state of Uttar Pradesh in 1991. He died of sepsis and multi-organ failure on August 21, 2021.  He was 89.

He was born on January 5, 1932 and became MLA for the first time in 1967. He had won the assembly polls several times and also held several important portfolios in the BJP. Kalyan Singh was also appointed Rajasthan governor. 

Four names have been selected for Padma Vibhushan, these include Kalyan Singh (Posthumous), Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat (Posthumous) for his contribution in the field of civil services, Prabha Atre from Maharashtra for her contribution in the field of Arts and Radheyshyam Khemka (Posthumous) from Uttarakhand for his contribution in the field of literature and education. 

 

This year, the President of India has approved conferment of 128 Padma Awards including 2 duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one). The Padma Awards list also includes names of 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri receipts. 

The Home Ministry announced the Padma Awards on the eve of 73rd Republic Day.
