“Not Launching Party But…”: Congress ‘Rebel’ Ghulam Nabi Azad To NDTV

Srinagar:

The Congress leadership is not open to criticism, senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told NDTV on Saturday, speaking out for the first time on speculation that he was going to launch a new breakaway party from Jammu and Kashmir.

Mr Azad denied that he is forming a new front, but added that “nobody knows what happens next in politics”.

“During Indira Gandhi and Rajiv (Gandhi) ji’s time, we were given too much freedom to question when things were going wrong. They would never mind criticism. They would not see it as offensive. Today, the leadership sees it as offensive,” said Mr Azad, who was among the 23 senior Congress leaders who wrote to party chief Sonia Gandhi last year, seeking sweeping reforms in the organisation.

Asked about the speculation that he is forming a new party, he replied, “No-nothing like this. There is a disconnect between people and the (Congress) leadership for the past over two years.”
