The Opposition party listed the rising inflation amid spiralling fuel prices, unemployment, state of the economy, condition of farmers, communal situation, dip in budgetary allocations for many social welfare schemes and the stand-off at the borders with China as the major failures of the Modi government during its eight years in power.
Releasing a Hindi booklet titled, ‘8 Saal, 8 Chhal, Bhajpa Sarkar Vifal’, along with his colleague Randeep Surjewala, AICC general secretary Ajay Maken said: “We have listed the entire failures of the Modi government in eight parts and if you look at them, each failure looks bigger than the other… We would be happy if the PM comes forward for a debate with us on what we have presented here as his government’s eight major failures…”.
The Congress critique highlighted the misery caused to people due to the spiralling inflation, especially of fuel prices, and pointed out how the wholesale price index marked a 30-year high last month and how retail inflation was at an eight-year high this month and quoted figures to show how the prices of many items were much lower during the UPA regime.
The Opposition accused the government of saddling the Indians, especially the youth who form the largest population segment, with growing unemployment amid falling employment recruitment in various sectors, including the Army. The Opposition blamed the Modi government for the fall in GDP and compared it with the higher growth rates during the UPA years. It pointed to the record fall of the rupee and to India slipping on the global hunger index and global food security index.
