Mild earthquake tremors felt in Delhi, epicenter in Punjabi Bagh

New Delhi: Earthquake tremors were felt in the national capital Delhi on Sunday afternoon. According to the National Center for Seismology, an earthquake of magnitude 2.1 on the Richter scale struck Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh area at 12:02 pm today.

Earthquake tremors have been felt in Delhi earlier as well.

Mild earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi late on June 1. The magnitude of this earthquake was measured at 2.4 magnitudes on the Richter scale. At that time the epicenter of the earthquake was Rohini area of Delhi. However, there was no report of any loss of life or property from anywhere till late night. 

According to information received from the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake was recorded at 9:54 pm. It is said that people came out of the houses after feeling the tremors. No damage was reported as the intensity of the earthquake was low.

Earthquake also occurred on February 12, 2021

Earlier, an earthquake hit all of North India including Delhi-NCR on February 12, 2021. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 6.3 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was about 90 km below the ground in Tajikistan. 

However, there was no loss of life. Now this is the third time earthquake tremors have been felt. According to the National Center for Seismology, NCS, people came out of their homes as soon as the earthquake struck.

Error by seismology department

The Department of Seismology had earlier erroneously stated that the earthquake occurred twice on February 12 – first time at 10:31 pm and then three minutes later at 10:34.

The department put the epicenter of the second quake near Amritsar, which had a magnitude of 6.1. But later M Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, said that this happened due to a glitch in the system. It was later rectified. There was only one earthquake, the epicenter of which was in Tajikistan.
