Maharashtra’s ruling parties express concern over ‘TRP racket’; BJP: Other serious issues beset state

Mumbai: Maharashtra’s ruling parties Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP expressed concern over the alleged TRP racket busted by the Mumbai Police. The three parties said the fact that the Mumbai Police commissioner addressed a press conference to expose the racket pointed to the seriousness of the offence. “If the Mumbai Police commissioner is addressing a press conference, then it means that the police must have gathered some facts. He would not speak otherwise. He is a professional and the information he has revealed is authentic,” Shiv Sena’s South Mumbai MP Arvind Sawant told ET on Thursday.

The Sena MP added: “No one is above the law. The police has followed the correct procedure. Let the law take its own course.” NCP spokesperson Mahesh Tapase echoed Sawant by saying that the information is a matter of deep concern. “See, the media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy. So such a revelation by none other than the police commissioner is a matter of deep concern. The truth will come out soon,” said Tapase.

According to Tapase, certain channels and media organisations are not showing “unfiltered truth” but have been “tampering with the news”. Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant tweeted thanking the Mumbai Police for its “endeavour to save our democracy and the country”. Maharashtra BJP said “if the Mumbai Police has proof, let them act on it”. Party spokesperson Keshav Upadhye told ET: “However, other serious issues, like crimes against women, beset the state and the police should also look into them seriously.”
