Spain: Barcelona president Joan Laporta says contract talks with Lionel Messi’s renewal are “progressing adequately” with La Liga giants still hoping to get a talismanic presence tied to fresh terms.
“All the Catalans, Barcelona, Catalunya and the entire football world are happy because Leo won the Copa America.
“It is very exciting to see the best player in football history get excited about winning a title like this and he made all of us cry with joy.
“It is important for the club and for La Liga that the best player in the world stays here and everyone here has to make an effort. Laporta has told me to remain calm and that they are working on the question and we are confident that he (Messi) will be here for several more years,” said Barca coach Koeman about Messi’s renewal.
“He is very happy, we are all happy, I am happy for Leo who has managed [to win the Copa America], together with his team-mates, and that Argentina are once again in the elite, and [I am] also [happy] for [Sergio] Aguero.
According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Barcelona club president Joan Laporta tried hard to get Messi back. However, some matters still remain to be resolved between Messi and the club. Messi’s departure will come as a blow to the club, which is already facing financial challenges.
“I am happy for Messi’s family, for Argentina, for Barcelona who are recognised, admired and loved for having this bond with Leo.”
Recently, Messi has become the player to play the most matches for his country Argentina. He has a total of 75 goals recorded in international football. Pele scored 77 goals for Brazil and is currently at the top of the South American list. In the excellent form in which Messi is running, he can break Pele’s record in the next one or two matches and register his name on it.
