Karnataka hijab row LIVE updates: High Court says, 'We will go by what Constitution'

Karnataka hijab row: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday is hearing the petitions filed by four girls questioning the ban on wearing hijab (headscarf) in colleges. 

Several junior colleges in the state have been witnessing protests for the past few days where girls wearing hijab were denied from entering the campus.

12:47 pm: Senior Counsel Devadatt Kamat says State’s stand is not that innocuous. That is why they are opposing the petition.

12:46 pm: Advocate General tells Karnataka High Court: Autonomy is given to colleges to decide uniforms; says students who want relaxation shall approach the College Development Committee.

12:44 pm: Senior Advocate Devdutt Kamat, appearing for the petitioner, says – wearing of headscarf is an essential part of Muslim culture.

12:40 pm: Justice Krishna S Dixit: Keep all emotions aside. We will go by reason, by law, not by passion or emotions. We will go by what Constitution says. Constitution is the Bhagavad Gita for me.

12:30 pm: The plea is being heard by Justice Krishna S Dixit.
