Actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister have reached Bandra police station in Mumbai to record their statements in a sedition case that has been filed against them. The Bombay High Court, which has granted them interim protection from arrest, had asked Ms Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel to appear before the Mumbai Police today.
Ms Ranaut, who has been provided Y-plus category security of CRPF personnel, arrived at the police station in Bandra around 1 pm along with her advocate amid heavy media presence. The Mumbai police had sent notices three times asking them to appear for recording their statements in the case.
The Bandra police had registered the case against Ms Ranaut and her sister in October following a complaint lodged against them for allegedly “trying to create hatred and communal tension” through their posts on social media. The First Information Report against them following orders from a magistrates court in Bandra.
Ms Ranaut and her sister had then approached the Bombay high court seeking to cancel the FIR and the October 17 order passed by the magistrate following which the case was filed against them.
During the hearing, the division bench of Justices SS Shinde and MS Karnik had questioned the police for invoking the sedition charge in the case, and observed it was of the prima facie opinion that the charges of sedition was wrongly invoked.
“If someone does not fall in line with the government, then can sedition charges be invoked?” the court had asked.
The court will now take up the matter on January 11.
Earlier today, Ms Ranaut had posted a video on Twitter saying is being unfairly targeted for daring to speak her mind. “Why am I being mentally, emotionally and now physically tortured? I need answers from this nation… I stood for you it’s time you stand for me… Jai Hind,” she tweeted.

Kangana Ranaut made headlines last year with her row with Maharashtra’s ruling Shiv Sena with her comments on the Sushant Rajput case and alleged lawlessness in Mumbai.
The battle between the Sena and Ms Ranaut had escalated after her comparison of the country’s financial capital with Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and claims that she was “scared” to live there. The Sena and NCP’s Anil Deshmukh had suggested that she quit living there.
The row was also fuelled by the Mumbai civic authorities’ demolition of Ms Ranaut’s office in the posh Pali Hills area, citing 14 “violations”.
Ms Ranaut secured a stay on the demolition after it was almost over and, filed a ₹ 2 crore compensation claim. In her petition, she claimed the demolition was a direct result of her comments against the Maharashtra government.
