Jammu&Kashmir: NIA busts Pakistan-backed terrorists, over ground workers in major crackdown

So far, 21 terrorists and their associates have been arrested since Oct 12 by NIA in the J&K terrorism conspiracy case. Eight were arrested on Friday, while 13 arrested earlier. The NIA has so far raided 55 places.

New Delhi: In a major crackdown against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday conducted searches at multiple locations in the UT in connection with the Jammu and Kashmir terrorism conspiracy case.

So far, 21 terrorists and their associates have been arrested since Oct 12 by NIA in the J&K terrorism conspiracy case. Eight were arrested on Friday, while 13 arrested earlier. The NIA has so far raided 55 places.

As many as 15 terrorists have so far been neutralised in two weeks as per IGP (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar. 

According to the premier investigation agency, cadres of various proscribed terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), Al Badr and similar other outfits and their affiliates including the Resistance Front (TRF), People Against Fascist Forces (PAFF) are involved in a conspiracy to carry out violent acts in Jammu and Kashmir and other major cities of the country. 

Over the past few days, several civilians have been killed by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, sparking fear in the Valley.

Timeline of Crackdown

October 10: NIA had registered the case as of October 10 initiated the investigation. 

October 12: NIA arrested four accused in the case— Waseem Ahmed Sofi, Tariq Ahmed Dar, Bilal Ahmed Mir, and Tariq Ahmed Bafanda—during raids at 16 locations in Srinagar, Pulwama, and Shopian districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

October 13: NIA arrested five terror operatives in Jammu and Kashmir terrorism conspiracy case during fresh raids at two places in Srinagar. Those arrested were identified as Md Haneef Chiralu, Hafeez, Owais Dar, Mateen Bhat, and Arif Farooq Bhat. During its raids at two locations in Srinagar, NIA said it seized electronic devices and incriminating jihadi documents.

October 20: NIA conducted raids at 11 places in Jammu and Kashmir in the terrorism conspiracy case on October 20. Searches were conducted in Srinagar, Baramulla, Pulwama, Awantipora, Sopore and Kulgam. 

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the five arrested accused persons are terror associates and Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of various proscribed terrorist organisations and have been instrumental in providing logistical support to terrorists and facilitating them in carrying out terror activities,” the NIA said.

“The terror associates or OGWs of various terrorist organisations are conspiring with their handlers and commanders based in a neighboring country and also indulging in the radicalization of local youth for the purpose of recruiting and training them in the handling of arms, ammunition, and explosives,” the NIA said in a statement.
