IPL 2021: Shreyas Iyer to undergo shoulder injury, Pant likely to lead Delhi Capitals in this season

New Delhi: Indian team batsman Shreyas Iyer will miss the 2021 edition of the 14th season of the Indian Premier League i.e. IPL, because he suffered a serious injury during the first ODI of the opening series between India and England played in Pune on Tuesday 23 March. Shreyas Iyer, who played IPL for the Delhi Capitals, will now have to undergo surgery. However, it will be decided only when the next week’s checkup will be done.

Now the question arose, who will replace Shreyas Iyer as Delhi Capitals captain., “There is no consensus on who should be captain yet. There’s a faction of the management which is convinced that Pant should assume charge and then there’s another which is keen to have an experienced captain,” a source said.

“Pant is the first name that pops up in everyone’s mind. He is the hot property at the moment. But a few in the management pointed out that his lack of experience in captaining a team could go against him. Also, there’s thought that the added responsibility could hamper his form,” a source also said.

According to the information available with InsideSport.co, DC promoters Kiran Kumar Gandhi and Parth Jindal in consultation with coach Ricky Ponting will take the final call soon.

Shreyas Iyer overwhelmed by peoples’ love took to his Twitter handle and wrote, ‘I’ve been reading your messages and have been overwhelmed by all the outpouring of love and support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone. You know what they say, the greater the setback, the stronger the comeback. I shall be back soon. [Red heart] [folded hands]”.

“While it is confirmed that he would be undergoing surgery, Shreyas would be examined by the surgeon next week and the date of surgery would be decided thereafter. Surgery would take place around 10-14 days from now,” the source said.
