Chennai: Chennai Super Kings have picked Australia left-arm speedster Jason Behrendorff as a replacement for Josh Hazlewood for the 2021 VIVO Indian Premier League season that gets underway on Friday (April 9).
Three-time champions CSK kick off their campaign on Saturday (April 10) with a game against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
“Looking at the options available we felt Behrendorff would be ideal. He has the ability to move the ball both ways, can be quick, and is left-arm,” CSK CEO KS Viswanathan said.
Australia’s Hazlewood opted out of IPL-14 due to personal reasons.
Behrendorff, who has played 11 ODIs and seven T20Is, featured in the 2019 IPL for Mumbai Indians. He is expected to fly out to India next week after playing in the final of Australia’s domestic 50-over The Marsh Cup for Western Australia against New South Wales on Sunday
The last edition held in the UAE was the first time that the Super Kings failed to qualify for the Playoffs in their 11 seasons, and the MS Dhoni-led team, who have made it to the final on eight occasions, will look to prove that the miss was a blip.
“The team is in good shape. The process has been good… and we believe in our process. The captain is very clear – you should do the process properly and if the process is fine, the results will come,” the CSK CEO concluded.
