India’s Journey from 10 to 100-cr Covid 19 vaccination

India vaccinated over 100 crore citizens by October 21 across the country. India started its vaccination drive on January 16 this year with only two vaccines, namely Covaxin and Covishield. Government officials, including frontline workers, state and Central police personnel, armed forces, election staff, and the likes were only allowed to take the vaccines.

On March 1, the Government of India asked people above the age of 60 to get vaccinated, along with those above 45 years having one or more of 20 comorbidities. 

From April 1, those above the age of 45 with no comorbidities were also allowed to take the vaccination. Thereafter, the government opened vaccination for everyone above 18 years of age.

The latest report says that around 75 percent of people have got their first dose, while around 31 percent have also taken their second dose. 

HOW WE REACHED THIS FAR

While a large section of people was initially vaccine-hesitant, the Government of India clarified why precisely they should get vaccinated. The Centre provided the right information and benefits of vaccines to all with the help of media, social influencers, and credible doctors. India was prepared with two vaccines, Covaxin and Covishield; later it imported Sputnik-V from Russia.

Amidst a sea of fake news and myths, India has successfully managed to come this far to vaccinate 100 crore people in a nation of over 130 crore citizens. India has surely done something that even developed nations could not do. 

The Journey to 100 crore vaccinations 

11 April, 2021- On the 86th day of the vaccination drive, the Government of India vaccinated over 10 crore people.

25 May, 2021- Since the Government of India allowed all adults to take vaccinations, the vaccination drive picked a good pace. On this day, over 20 crore people got vaccinated. 

24 June, 2021- 30 crore vaccinations achieved on this day.

17 July, 2021- By the first of July, the second wave of Coronavirus had gripped the nation, and people got terrified more than before. Yet, India administered over 40 crore vaccinations. 

8 August, 2021- In nearly a month of the last vaccination milestone, we reached 50-crore vaccination mark. 

26 August, 2021- Next, The 60-crore mark was breached on 26 August. 

8 Sept, 2021- About 70.75 crore people are vaccinated to this day. 

19 Sept, 2021- 80 crore vaccine shots administered to this date. 

3 Oct, 2021- Another milestone was achieved on October 3, when India vaccinated 90 crore people.

21 Oct, 2021- India vaccinated over 100 crore and on the occasion of this victory, PM Narendra Modi visited and thanked healthcare workers for their seminal contribution.

Soon- In a few months or so, we expect everyone in the country to be vaccinated. According to AIIMS, New Delhi, Director Randeep Guleria, the new goal is to get the entire population at least one shot by the year-end. Also, vaccination of kids above 2 years has already started.
