India records over 1 lakh cases in 24-hour, highest one day surge

New Delhi: In a first, India on Monday reported covid-19 cases in the last 24-hour. Prior to this, the country’s highest surge was recorded at 97,894 on September 16 last year, after which the number of cases witnessed sharp drop until late February. Of the total cases, over 57,700 infections have been reported from Maharashtra.

The highest surge since the beginning of the pandemic comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with health authorities. Taking the note of high surge, the Prime Minister’s office in a statement said that the laxity in maintaining covid appropriate behaviour and lack of effective implementation of containment measures have led to the abated spike in number of daily cases.

In view of the high surge in cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also sent special task forces to Punjab, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.
