New Delhi: India sees a sharp spike in CORONA infection cases in last 24 hours. With 53,480 new infections, Highest of this year, India”s COVID-19 tally reaches to 1,21,49,335. While 354 new fatalities, the highest since December 16, took the death count to 1,62,468, according to Union health ministry data updated on Wednesday.
The Union Health Ministry said that eight states – Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Punjab & Madhya Pradesh accounted for 84.73% of the new Covid-19 cases.
“Trends show the virus is still very active just when we think we can control it, it sparks back,” said VK Paul, chairman of the National Expert Committee on Vaccine Administration. He, however, denied that the mutated strains have a role to play in this surge.
With several parts of the country reporting a second wave of Covid-19 cases, the Centre Tuesday warned that the situation is going from bad to worst and urged states to achieve 100 per cent vaccination coverage of those above the age of 45 years in surge districts within the next two weeks. The Government will roll out the third phase of its vaccination drive from April 1 to cover all those above the age of 45. Government claims over 19 lakh vaccination doses given in last 24 hours.
