New Delhi: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday condoled the demise of veteran singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, who passed away on Tuesday night. He was 69. The Vice President said, “the country has lost yet another veteran singer and composer.”
“In the demise of Shri Bappi Lahiri, India has lost yet another veteran singer and composer. Bappi Da will always be remembered for his foot-tapping numbers. My deepest condolences to his family and followers. Om Shanti!” the Vice President said in a tweet.
Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla also expressed grief over the demise of the singer and said Bappi Lahiri’s death is an irreparable loss to the music world.
In a tweet in Hindi, the Lok Sabha speaker said, “Eminent singer-composer Bappi Lahiri ji has passed away. He made a global recognition with his unique voice and amazing music. People of all ages were fans of his tunes. His death is an irreparable loss to the music world. May God rest the departed soul, condolences to the family members.”
Bappi Lahiri was admitted to Mumbai’s CritiCare Hospital. His doctor said the singer was suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea and recurrent chest infection.
“He was hospitalised in Criticare Hospital, Juhu for 29 days with this. He recovered well and was discharged home on February 15. However, after a day at home, his health deteriorated again and he was brought back to Criticare hospital in a critical state and succumbed to his illness at about 11.45 pm. He suffered from Covid-19 infection last year. He had OSA for the last 1 year,” Dr Deepak Namjoshi said.
The last rites and cremation ceremony of singer Bappi Lahiri will take place on Thursday (February 17) morning.
In a statement, the family members said, “The cremation will take place on the arrival of Bappa (son of Bappi Lahiri) from Los Angeles tomorrow (Thursday) mid-morning. We are seeking love and blessings for his soul.”
