New Delhi: After Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor sells the most cars in the country. Hyundai’s entry-level hatchback Santro is one of the best selling cars. This car has ruled the hearts of people for years. But now the company has taken a big decision, which is going to shock its fans.
Hyundai Motor India Limited has stopped production of the Santro. The car was produced at Hyundai Motor’s Tamil Nadu plant. This car was first launched in India in 1998. That is, the journey of Centro in the Indian market for 24 years has now come to an end. With this car, the Korean company Hyundai had entered the Indian market.
The Hyundai Santro was very popular as an affordable and family car. But in the last few years, due to increasing competition, its demand has been falling continuously. Due to which the company has stopped production of the petrol model of Santro, while the sale of CNG variants will continue. However, there is also news that till the dealership stock runs out, the sale of petrol variants will also continue.
Hyundai Santro ceased production
The company launched the Hyundai Santro in a new avatar in October 2018. It is being said that due to the continuous increase in the prices of the car and the fall in demand, the company has had to take a decision to stop its production. Interestingly, this hatchback was once one of the best-selling cars of Hyundai. According to the report, the draft notification making 6 airbags mandatory in cars can also be a big reason for the discontinuation of this car model. Apart from this, due to the increase in fuel prices, customers are preferring compact cars over entry-level hatchbacks.
Continuous decline in sales
If we look at the sales figures, the average sale of Santro in the last 6 months was less than 2,000 units every month. So last week its last unit was rolled out from the production line in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. In the financial year 2021-22, a total of 23,700 units of the second generation Santro were sold, and since its update at the end of 2018, the total sales of about 1.46 lakh units were registered.
Engine of Hyundai Santro
Hyundai Santro prices have increased by 20 to 30 percent in the last three and a half years. The Santro was powered by a 1.1-litre inline four-cylinder petrol engine that produced 68 bhp of maximum power and 99 Nm of peak torque. While the CNG variant generated 59 bhp and 85 Nm torque. Its price in the Indian market is between Rs 4.89 lakh and Rs 6.41 lakh (ex-showroom).
