Happy Birthday Pankaj Udhas: Know here the interesting story behind him winning the Padmashree award in 2006

New Delhi: Veteran and famous ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas celebrates his birthday on May 17, winning millions of hearts with his beautiful voice he is turning 70 today. Pankaj Udhas is not only known for Ghazals but also for his amazing and hit songs. He has won the hearts of the audience with his brilliant voice in many Bollywood films.

Pankaj Udhas was born on 17 May 1951 in Jaitpur, Gujarat. He was the youngest of three brothers, both his elder brothers Manhar and Nirmal Udhas were famous singers and he is the youngest talent of the family. These two brothers started singing in the Udhas family. After this, Pankaj Udhas followed the footsteps of his brothers and started singing. He learned tabla for four years from the Sangeet Natya Academy, Rajkot. After this, Pankaj Udhas learned the nuances of classical music singing from Master Navrang.

Pankaj Udhas got his first chance in Bollywood from the 1972 film Kaamna. On the advice of composer Usha Khanna, he was given the opportunity to sing in the film. The film was a flop but Pankaj Udhas’s song was highly praised. He got his real identity from the song ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai..’ from the film ‘Naam’ of actor Sanjay Dutt, which came in 1986. He has since lent his spiritual voice to many films. Apart from this, he has also recorded many albums and also sung many of the best ghazals. Padmashree Pankaj Udhas has given a new height to Indian music.

Pankaj Udhas was awarded the Padmashree, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honor, in 2006 from the hands of the then President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for his outstanding work. Also, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh was among his millions of fans, one day, Pankaj along with the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra Vilasrao Deshmukh also attended the ceremony as a guest.

After Pankaj’s performance, the two met behind the stage. After a brief conversation, Vilasrao told Pankaj how big a fan he is and asked Pankaj if he had received the Padmashree. Meanwhile, in the year 2005, Pankaj completed 25 years of his singing and along with this, he has been helping cancer victims through some organizations.

On the eve of Republic Day in 2006, when he was announced to be conferred the Padmashree, a friend called him and congratulated him. On this, Pankaj asked, “What are you congratulating me for?” So that friend said, ‘You have been announced to be awarded the Padmashree.’ Then Pankaj saw the news on TV and this is how he knew about it and was extremely happy.
