New Delhi: Gauahar Khan has expressed her discontentment with Supreme Court’s refusal to grant protection from arrest to the makers and actors of Amazon Prime Video’s controversial web show Tandav.
Ever since its release, Tandav has been at the centre of controversies for its alleged representation of Hindu gods in bad light and promoting religious disharmony. Multiple cases and FIRs have been lodged against the makers and the actors of the show in the same light.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court declined to grant interim protection sought by maker Ali Abbas Zafar and others related to the web show, saying that the Freedom of speech is not an absolute right.
The bench comprising justices of Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy and M R Shah heard as many as three separate petitions filed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Amazon Prime India head Aparna Purohit, producer Himanshu Mehra, ‘Tandav’ writer Gaurav Solanki and actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
When Zeeshan Ayuub’s lawyer argued that it wasn’t up to the actor to alter the script and thoughts portrayed in the web show are not his own, the Apex court said, “You accepted the contract after reading the script. You cannot hurt religious sentiments.”
The ruling has attracted distinct views. While some has come out in the support of the Supreme Court saying Hindus have been a victim of such portrayal for long, others have condemned the decision stating that the freedom of OTT platforms is being compromised.
Meanwhile, reacting to the development, a user sarcastically wrote, ““Excellent. Next people playing murderers on screen might be tried for the same. After all, they read the script…” Gauahar Khan retweeted the tweet along with three ‘face with monocle’ emojis.
Gauahar Khan, who plays the role of Maithili Sharan in the web show, retweeted the reaction along with three monocole emojis.
FIRs have been lodged in Mumbai, Lucknow, Greater Noida and Bengaluru against Ali Abbas Zafar, actor Saif Ali Khan and several others due to controversial scenes that have allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments being depicted in the web series ‘Tandav’.
