New Delhi: Winter is here – a crucial time to ensure that you stay on top of your health.  The advent of winter can exacerbate certain health conditions like arthritis and skin conditions like dryness, eczema and psoriasis. So, it is necessary that one includes foods that warm up the body to ensure we stay away from illnesses. 

So, here’s a list of winter superfoods that you must include in your diet to improve immunity, lose weight and stay healthy. The good news is, they are all in-season during the winter and pack an immense nutritional punch.

 Carrots

This root vegetable contains high amounts of beta carotene which the body converts into Vitamin A. Vitamin A is a key nutrient in immune function, helping to protect against infection and reduce the risk and duration of respiratory illness by keeping our lungs healthy.

Beetroot

 It is packed with beneficial phytochemicals and antioxidants which protect the immune system by fighting off destructive free radicals, which harm healthy cells and their DNA.

Peas

Commonly known as matar, peas are available in abundance during the winter season. Being a rich source of fibre, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients, peas can be an excellent winter food choice. However, avoid overconsumption of peas as it can cause gas, bloating, and other digestive discomforts. 

Sweet potatoes

 Root vegetables such as sweet potatoes are often known to have a warming effect on the body. They are also rich in fibre, potassium, antioxidants, and other nutrients. Furthermore, it is a source of complex carbohydrates that can help keep the body satiated for a longer time. 

Citrus fruits

 By now, we’ve all heard that citrus fruits are synonymous with vitamin C. So, not mentioning them as a winter food would leave the list incomplete, and for a good reason. Fruits such as oranges, grapes, and lemons are jam-packed with minerals and phytochemicals. Therefore, including them in your winter diet is a must if you want to develop a super-strong immune system.

Honey

 The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of honey are widely acknowledged. But did you know that honey can prove to be an effective ingredient for the winter season? Commonly known as shehed, honey can be used during the winters in multiple ways. Some uses may include treating sore throat, moisturizing dry skin and chapped lips, boosting immunity, and more.
