French Open: Novak Djokovic will face Rafael Nadal in semi-final match

Paris: World number one Novak Djokovic won four sets to reach the semi-finals of the French Open tennis tournament where he will face 13-time champion Rafael Nadal.

Due to the Covid curfew, there was no spectator in the stadium to watch this exciting match. Djokovic, after going through a few odd moments, defeated ninth seed Matteo Berrettini 6-3 6-2 6-7 (5) 7-5 in the match.

Djokovic said, ‘It was a very difficult match. I was feeling tense the whole time. Now he has to face his arch-rival Nadal, who has a 105-2 record in this tournament on claycourt. Nadal defeated tenth seed Diego Schwartzman 6-3 4-6 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Regarding the match against Djokovic, Nadal said, ‘We both know each other very well. Everyone knows anything can happen in matches like these. Nadal has reached the semi-finals for the 14th time in the French Open while Djokovic has reached the semi-finals for the 11th time. In the Grand Slam tournament, Djokovic managed to make the 40th and Nadal 35th time in the last four. Nadal and Roger Federer have won 20 while Djokovic has won 18 Grand Slam titles.

These two players will face each other for the 58th time. Djokovic is currently leading 29-28 but Nadal is leading 10-6 at the Grand Slam and 7-1 at the French Open. The other semi-final in the men’s section will be between fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and sixth seed Aleksandr Zverev. Men’s singles semi-final matches will start on June 11 at 6.30 pm.

In the women’s section, the four players who made it to the semi-finals have reached the last four of the Grand Slam tournament for the first time. The last time this happened was in 1978 at the Australian Open. In the women’s semi-finals, Maria Sakari will face Barbora Krejcikova while Anastasia Pavlichenkova will face Tamara Zidansek.
