French Open 2021: Novak Djokovic reaches fourth round for record 12th time

New Delhi: World number one player Novak Djokovic continues to dominate the French Open 2021. On Saturday, he entered the fourth round of the tournament, repeating the record for the 12th time in a row to reach the last 12. The Serbian star sealed his place in the fourth round with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 win over 93-ranked Ricardas Berankis.

Djokovic has won the 18 Grand Slam men’s singles titles, didn’t face a single break point against Berankis, scoring 30 winners and making just 18 unforced mistakes. Djokovic will now take on Italy’s 19-year-old Lorenzo Musetti for a place in the quarterfinals.

Apart from this, in the women’s section, Sofia Kenin also managed to make it to the next round but 5th seed Svitolina became a victim of the upset. Earlier, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer had reached round 16 for 11 consecutive times. Djokovic is trying to get the second French Open and 19th Grand Slam title overall. Nadal and Federer have both won 20 trophies each. Sofia Kenin of America defeated compatriot Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the fourth round of Roland Garros for the third year in a row. Number four Kenin remains the top seed in the women’s draw. She was runner-up in October, losing to Inga Sviatec.

Australian Open 2020 champion Kenin put up 48 winners, while Pegula could do so only 18 times. Kenin made 10 double faults and broke her serve five times but eventually managed to win by saving her four service games.

Former US runner-up Sloane Stephens defeated 18th seed Karolina Muchova 6-3, 7-5 in the fourth round. Stephens was defeated in the final of the 2018 Roland Garros. He won his only Grand Slam title a year ago at the US Open. She will now face Barbara Krajesikova, who upset Svitolina 6-3, 6-2.
