New Delhi: Many leaders from political outfits as well as farmers’ unions alike have held Punjabi actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu responsible for the widespread violence during the tractor rally on Republic Day.
Notably, the actor led a group of farmers into the Red Fort on Republic Day and hoisted flags at the historical monument. The incident took place at a time when farmers were attempting to hold a peaceful tractor rally in the national capital to show their dissent against government’s recently introduced agriculture related laws.
Meanwhile, in an explanation, the actor in a Facebook Live post said, “We have only hoisted the Nishan Sahib flag on the Red Fort while exercising our democratic right to protest.”
Deep has apparently been involved in many controversies. Ever since the farmers’ agitation has started, the actor’s name has popped in headlines more than often. Last week, Deep was summoned by the National Investigation Agency(NIA) in connection with Sikhs For Justice case which was reportedly registered on December 15 last year.
After Deep’s multiple eye grabbing stints in the light of protests related to agriculture laws, even farmers have now disassociated themselves from the actor. Samyukt Kisan Morcha, which has been a leading force in the its protest, has now distanced itself from Deep, accusing him of leading the famers to Red Fort. They also called out him for his provocative Monday night speech which allegedly promoted separatism.
“He [Sidhu] posted a video claiming responsibility and justifying the act. Those who hoisted the flag at Red Fort were allowed a free passage as part of a conspiracy,” said BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan.
Bhartiya Kisan Union also condemned Deep’s actions and blamed him for misleading Youth. “We condemn this act of Deep Sidhu in strong words and we think that he was working as a government agent. We didn’t have any plans to go to Red Fort but he did not follow our guidelines and even misled some youth,” said Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) president Gurnam Singh Charuni.
Deep Sidhu is a renowned face of the Pollywood industry. Ramta Jogi and Jora Das Numbria are some of his most famous films.
