New Delhi (Anish Yande): Data of more than 533 million users, from across 106 countries, on Facebook have been leaked. The data of these users were leaked by a hacker for free in a hacking forum on Saturday. Data of users from India have also been leaked.
Data of 533 million Facebook users compromised:
The details leaked by the hacker include the occupation, marital and relationship status, gender, date of joining of the user, and place of work. Leaked data also includes details such as Facebook IDs, phone numbers, birthdates, profiles, full names, locations, and email addresses of users.
The hacked Facebook database was leaked initially on Telegram in 2019. Hackers charged $20 per search of the database. The database was leaked two more times in June 2020 and January 2021.
According to reports, data of 11 million users in the UK, 32 million US account user data, and 6 million users in India have been leaked. Details of more than 5.5 lakh users from Afghanistan have been leaked. From Bangladesh, data of 3.8 million users and data of 8 million users from Brazil have been leaked.
1.2 million users from Australia and 6.1 million users from India are leaked on hacking forums. The database on Telegram is accessible to anyone with basic data skills.
Cybersecurity professional shares details about the Facebook leak:
Alon Gal, the Chief Technology Officer at Hudson Rock talked about the Facebook leak through a Twitter post. Hudson Rock is a cybercrime intelligence firm.
Gal shared details of the leaked database on Twitter stating that if a person had a Facebook account, it was likely that their personal details have been compromised.
The data leaks of user accounts are a threat to Facebook’s revenue models which use personal information for selling targeted ads to users. Facebook had stated that the data leaked in 2019 was compromised due to a vulnerability. The vulnerability was patched in August 2019.
