New Delhi: Amid the huge increase in Covid-19 cases in the country, a report said that several members of the national workforce on the coronavirus pandemic have recommended a national lockdown to break the chain of transmission of the virus.
The Taskforce has members from major health institutions in the country including AIIMS and Indian Council of Medical Research discussing the recent unprecedented surge in corona virus cases.
In these discussions, some members of the Taskforce have reported that the double mutant strain in circulation is more contagious and possibly lethal. At the same time, the entire health infrastructure is threatened by the increasing burden of caseload.
Ideas and suggestions for a national lockdown have become as important as those of Doctor VK Paul. Chairman of the Taskforce (National Expert Group on Immunization) named NEGVAC – The panel overseeing the COVID-19 management strategy in the country reported to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
COVID-19 cases are significantly increased after the catastrophic spike. In his last national address on 20 April, the PM described the lockdown as a “last resort” to deal with the corona virus epidemic.
India’s highest single-day spike during the first wave was around 97,000 COVID-19 cases in September last year. Yesterday, India’s daily affairs crossed the 4 lakh mark during the second wave. The daily death count is also reporting around 3,500 deaths in 24 hours in the country.
“The Covid-19 task force has been trying to say this very aggressively for the last few weeks that we should tell the people at the top that we should do a lockdown,” one member said in the report. A nationwide lockdown should be put in place instead of a lockdown in pieces in the states, ” he said.
Another member said that lockdown is the only acceptable scientific tool to check the spread of the virus and bring the situation under control.
