Coronavirus Pandemic: India records biggest daily COVID-19 spike in 5 months

New Delhi: According to data released by the Union Health Ministry, 59,118 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in India in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases to 1,18 in the country. 

The number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 has increased to 1,12,64,637.

The number of active COVID-19 cases has seen a significant increase in recent weeks. According to the Health Ministry update, 257 fresh deaths were recorded in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of coronavirus deaths to 1,60,949. The active caseload of Covid-19 in the country has increased to 4,21,066. However, 32,987 people have recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic over the last 24 hours.

Of the 257 new deaths, 111 are from Maharashtra, 43 from Punjab, 15 from Chhattisgarh, 12 from Kerala, 10 from Karnataka and 11 from Tamil Nadu.

So far, there have been a total of 160949 COVID-19 deaths in the country, including 53795 from Maharashtra, 12641 from Tamil Nadu, 12471 from Karnataka, 10978 from Delhi, 10316 from West Bengal, 8773 from Uttar Pradesh and 7201 from Andhra Pradesh.

According to data released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 23,86,04,638 sample tests for coronavirus have been conducted in India till date, of which 11,00,756 lakh COVID-19 samples were tested yesterday.

As per the nationwide vaccination campaign launched on January 16, a total of 5,55,04,440 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been given to the total population in the country.

India has seen a spike in daily caseloads due to spikes in some states. According to the Ministry of Health, six states – Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu – have contributed the most to new coronavirus cases.
