Coronavirus Effect: Bengal replaces health secretary amid COVID-19 data row

Kolkata: The West Bengal authorities has come beneath extreme criticism for allegedly fudging data with the intention to underplay the severity of the coronavirus pandemic within the state.

The state authorities led by chief minister Mamata Banerjee has additionally clashed with the central authorities over the report of central medical groups relating to the COVID-19 scenario in West Bengal.

On Tuesday, the West Bengal authorities transferred Health Secretary Vivek Kumar to the Environment Department and named Narayan Swaroop Nigam as his substitute, officers mentioned.

Kumar’s switch to the Environment Department as secretary comes days after a row over the state’s COVID-19 data, mentioned official sources.

Nigam, who was the Transport Secretary, has been appointed as Kumar’s substitute, as per a notification dated May 11.
