New Delhi: Months after filing numerous pleas, Bollywood actor Rhea Chakraborty’s brother Showik Chakraborty was finally granted bail by a special NDPS court on Wednesday. Showik was arrested in September for his alleged links with drug dealer and was said to be involved in the procurement of narcotic substances.
NCB had arrested both Showik and Rhea Chakraborty in the same case which had links with Bollywood and came into light after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. Rhea, meanwhile, was granted conditional bail on October 7.
Showik, who was kept in judicial custody in Taloja Central Jail in Raigad, in his plea claimed that no drugs were recovered from him in commercial quantity during the investigation.
“In the facts and circumstances of the present case, there has been no recovery of drugs in commercial quantity from the applicant… all allegations pertain only to small quantities, and hence the embargo imposed by Section 37 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 will not be applicable,” Showik’s lawyer, Satish Manshinde, said in his bail plea.
“The allegations against the applicant (Showik) will at the most make out a case of purchase of small quantities of drugs, which is, in essence, a bailable offence. There is not a shred of evidence to connect the applicant with the financing of any illicit traffic or harbouring any offenders and hence the ingredients of Section 27 of the NDPS Act, 1985 are not made out in the present facts and circumstances,” he added.
The plea further pointed out that Showik’s sister Rhea was constantly concerned over Sushant’s habit of consumption of drugs and even tried to convince the actor to get rid of it.
Showik had moved to NDPS court after Bombay High Court rejected his bail plea.
Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra apartment on June 14. The prima facie of his death was considered suicide until the deceased actor’s father, KK Singh, filed a complaint against Rhea Chakraborty and her kin of abetment of suicide.
The case, which was previously being handled by Mumbai Police, was transferred to CBI by the Centre after nationwide rage over young actor’s death. While Rhea and her brother were arrested in drugs case, the mystery of the death case still remains unsolved.
