Bihar, Madhya Pradesh reduce tax on petrol, diesel; new rates effective from Nov 5

The Central government, on Wednesday, slashed excise duties on petrol and diesel by Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 per litre respectively.

New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh and Bihar too have reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, hours after the Central government slashed excise duties on petrol and diesel by Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 per litre respectively. 

The Madhya Pradesh government, on Thursday, announced reduction of VAT on petrol and diesel by 4 per cent. This would bring diesel price down by Rs. 1.50 and petrol price down by Rs.2 in the state. 

From November 5 (Friday), people in Madhya Pradesh will get diesel at around Rs. 90.95 per litre, while petrol can be purchased at Rs. 106.86 a litre. 

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also announced reduction of VAT on petrol by Rs 3.20 per litre and on diesel by Rs 3.90 in the state. 

VAT rates differ from state to state, leading to differential rates of fuel.

Arunachal Pradesh also has decided to lower the price of petrol and diesel in the state after the Central government had cut the excise duty rate on the fuel.

Following the Centre’s excise duty cuts on Wednesday, many of the BJP-ruled States also decided to follow the suit and have cut fuel taxes.
