Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary health among 40 new Omicron cases recorded in state

Patna: The highly mutant Omicron variant of COVID-19 is spreading its rage across the country. The latest update on coronavirus comes from Bihar where all 40 COVID-19 samples at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) sent for genome sequencing have tested positive for Omicron.

The tests were conducted between January 1 and January 11, 2022.

According to sources to News24, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, state Additional Chief Secretary (health) Pratyaya Amrit swab samples were also sent for genome sequencing and the result tested both of them positive for Omicron. However, before their genome sequencing report arrived, both had tested negative for COVID-19. 

There has been no official confirmation on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s health status.

 

Bihar Additional Chief Secretary (health) Pratyaya Amrit said COVID-19 cases that are in the state are driven by Omicron variant of the virus.

“Total 40 samples were tested at IGIMS and all were of Omicron variant… Omicron is the dominant strain in Bihar in the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the situation is under control as maximum people have either no or mild symptoms,” Amrit said.

IGIMS examined all 40 samples of senior politicians, VVIPs, health department officials and a judge of Patna court. All the samples were infected with Omicron variant of coronavirus.   

Of the 40 samples which tested positive for Omicron, 22 were from Patna, five from Muzaffarpur, three from Gaya, two each from Jamui, Munger and Khagaria and one each from Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Saran and Bhagalpur. These also include eight doctors.
