Bengaluru shocker: A tale of 2 missing bodies of COVID victims and hospital negligence

The bodies were recovered from the mortuary of ESI Hospital in Rajajinagar, Bengaluru when workers went to the cold storage unit last week after a pungent smell started emanating from the room.

Bengaluru: Many families have lost their loved ones due to the COVID-19 and quite a few could not perform the last rites as the body was cremated by the hospitals themselves. Now in a major shocker, two bodies of coronavirus patients were recovered from the freezer in the mortuary of a Bengaluru hospital.

The bodies were recovered from the mortuary of ESI Hospital in Rajajinagar, Bengaluru when workers went to the cold storage unit last week after a pungent smell started emanating from the room.

Did no one visit the mortuary in the last 15 months?

As per a report by IANS, the bodies of Durga, a resident of Chamarajpet and Muniraju of KP Agrahara in Bengaluru were stored in a freezer without negligence.

Both the patients were admitted to hospital in July 2020 and after they died of virus their body was moved to an old mortuary for last rites that were to be conducted by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

In a major revelation, overwhelmed with the number of COVID-19 deaths, the hospital had to start a new mortuary to keep the bodies that were not accommodated in the existing one.

The focus then shifted to the new mortuary and the old one was left unattended. It was only after the foul smell from the previous mortuary, the hospital authorities woke up and rushed to find that two bodies of COVID-19 patients were rotting in there.

Whose body was cremated?

It is still unclear whose body was cremated instead of these two. However, the chain of bizarre incidents did not end, the families of both the victims were handed over the death certificate and were informed that Durga and Munijau were cremated.

After the bodies were recovered from the mortuary, cops were informed. With the help of Rajajinagar police, the family of Durga were tracked but her family was not ready to get back the body. The search for Muniraju’s kin is still underway.
