The BJP plans to make the upcoming Ram Temple and the “Congress conspiracy against top BJP leaders in the Babri demolition case” as a major election plank in Uttar Pradesh, as indicated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in his message welcoming the judgment and in the statements of other senior BJP leaders. “This judgment makes it clear that the former Congress government implicated senior BJP leaders and saints in the case out of political reasons and for vote-bank politics. The public will never forgive those who were responsible for this conspiracy,” Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said.
The party is looking at the prospect of a Hindu consolidation in its favour in the state amidst the Ram Temple in Ayodhya taking shape with the foundation being laid and the ground floor of the temple expected to be completed by the time Uttar Pradesh goes to polls in early 2022. Three BJP MPs from Uttar Pradesh, Sakshi Maharaj, Lalu Singh and Brijbhushan Sharan Singh have been acquitted by way of the judgment on Wednesday along with former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, former MP from UP Vinay Katiyar and two top members of the Ram Janambhoomi Trust, Champat Rai and Mahant Nritya Gopal Das.
Adityanath is pitching himself as a champion of the Ram Temple issue with the listless opposition in the state struggling for a new political narrative. His camp is showcasing how the CM showed great speed in translating thousands of pages of case documents within 10 months for the trial in Supreme Court to begin while Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav as CMs sat on this for years. The Yogi Camp is also hammering in the point how he is the only CM who has paid obeisance to the Ram Lalla in while Mayawati, Akhilesh Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have not done so.
The Opposition meanwhile seems out of ideas in UP and has failed to put the Yogi Adityanath government in the dock even after dastardly incidents like the brutal rape and murder of a Dalit girl in Hathras. This incident saw outrage on social media by opposition leaders Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati but both leaders have not visited the family. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said she was in touch with the family but has not visited them so far. The party’s state president Ajay Kumar Lalu held protests in Lucknow but the party has little base in the state to pose a formidable challenge to BJP on its own.
Instead, Adityanath spoke to the family on Wednesday evening, assuring them of the “most stringent action” against the accused and announced an Rs 25 lakh in aid, a house, job for a family member and a fast-track trial in the case. He also announced the setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to give a report within seven days on the entire matter. This followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to the CM on Wednesday morning asking him to take strictest action against the culprits. However, the opposition and especially former CM Mayawati who has been a champion of the backward castes, has been found wanting in hitting the road against the Yogi government.
