The fate of political giants at stake
In the first phase of the Assam Election 2021, the political fortunes of many stalwarts of BJP and Congress are at stake. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal (Majuli), Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami (Jorhat), Ministers Ranjit Dutta (Behali) and Sanjay Kishan (Tinsukia) are in the fray. Similar NDA partners and Assam Republic Council leader and ministers Atul Bora (Bokakhat) and Keshav Mahant (Kaliabor) are also in the fray.
The fate of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Ripun Bora (Gohpur), Congress Legislature Party leader Devvrat Saikia (Nazira) and Congress Secretary Bhupen Bora (Bihpuria) are also to be decided in the first phase.
264 candidates in the fray in the first phase
In the first phase, voters in Assam will decide the fate of 264 candidates. Implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 is a major issue in the state. This led to protests and violence in the state, although the state BJP is silent on this. This issue was neither heard during the party’s campaign nor did it find a place in the party’s manifesto. At the same time, Congress and other parties have assured to bring a bill in the Assembly against it for not implementing it in Assam when it comes to power.
