After wreaking havoc in West Bengal, Odisha, Cyclone Yaas turns into strong depression

Kolkata: When the landfall of Cyclone Yaas started, it was 9:15 on Wedneday morning. However, heavy rain and storm in the Dharma-Chandbali valley had started long before that.

Finally, Cyclone Yaas ended at 11 pm on Wednesday. Of course, the disaster does not end there. Weakened, Cyclone Yass has now turned into a deep depression. Its direction is now south of Jharkhand.

Meteorologists say Cyclone Yaas will lose power overall today. But before that, there is a possibility of extensive rainfall in West Bengal and Orissa. Apart from Gangetic West Bengal, heavy rains have started in Purulia, Bankura and large parts of West Midnapore districts due to Cyclone Yaas.

There were different opinions about how much Cyclone Yaas will affect West Bengal. However, in the end, meteorologists explained by hand that the direction of Cyclone Yaas has changed. Even if it touches the coastal region, it will hit the Dhamra port of Orissa.

Long before Cyclone Yaas hit, the situation in the coastal areas of West Bengal and Odisha began to worsen. As a result of strong tidal waves, a flood like situation was witnessed in Digha, Mandarmoni, East Midnapore, Khenjuri, Nandigram, Kantai, Ramnagar, Canning, Kakdwip, Frazerganj, Namkhana, Kultali, Kachuberia and Kulpi in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

Apparently, the worst affected areas in West Bengal are East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas districts. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will visit the district from Friday to review the damage caused by Cyclone Yaas.  Besides inspecting the situation on the spot, she will review the damage in a meeting with the concerned district administration and decide on the next steps. She will be accompanied by a task force headed by Chief Secretary Alapan Banerjee.
