Siliguri: In a major blow to the Congress just before the upcoming UP assembly elections next year, senior Congress leaders Rajesh Pati Tripathi and his son Lalitesh Pati Tripathi on Monday joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) here.

Both leaders joined TMC in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party General Secretary and CM’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

A strong Brahmin face of the party in the Varanasi-Mirzapur region, Lalitesh Pati Tripathi is a former MLA from the Congress. He is also the great grandson of Kamalapati Tripathi, UP’s former chief minister from the Congress. Lalitesh Pati Tripathi till recently was a close associate of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and was seen quite often with Vadra after she was made the in-charge for eastern UP.

The former Congress veteran was dissatisfied with the party and had quit this September, alleging that party workers were neglected in Congress. He had also been vice-president of UP unit of the Congress.

Earlier, in August, former Congress Member of Parliament Sushmita Dev had joined TMC.
