New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party Delhi convenor Shri Gopal Rai today announced that AAP leaders, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will protest at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday against the Central government’s step of introducing the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2021 in Parliament.
Addressing a press briefing on the issue on Tuesday, Delhi Cabinet Minister Gopal Rai spoke of the unconstitutional way in which the Central government was attempting to restrict the powers of an elected government in Delhi, leaving it virtually powerless.
“The BJP-ruled Central government is once again trying to rob the elected government of Delhi of its powers. The BJP lost poorly in the Assembly Elections in Delhi, and in the recently concluded MCD by-elections too, they won zero seats. Further, seeing the growing popularity of the Aam Aadmi Party from Delhi to Gujarat, seeing how the Party and its governance is being acknowledged and recognised, the BJP-ruled Centre has conspired to limit an elected government’s powers, and is attempting to overturn the judgement of a Constitution-bench–all of it to restrict the powers of the Delhi government, to stifle its growth,” he said.
Gopal Rai said that with introducing the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2021 in Parliament yesterday, the intention of the BJP is clear as day.
“One would do well to remember how even earlier under the leadership of Shri Arvind Kejriwal, through orders issued by the MHA, attempts were made to restrict the powers of the Delhi government. All powers were submitted to the LG, every file would have to be routed via LG House, which had led to several files being stalled, being delayed. Files pertaining to constructing mohalla clinics were delayed for years. The LG House even sat on files for installing CCTV cameras across the city,” he said.
“All of us, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain had sat all night at the LG House just to get a file cleared for the installation of CCTV cameras. He said that the same situation had arisen now, which had become a cause of worry for citizens of Delhi.
“The Delhi government had thus far worked during the COVID-19 pandemic and had now introduced the Deshbhakti budget, under which several schemes would be introduced. He mentioned the Delhi government’s plans of commemorating 75 years of Indian Independence and of the installation of 500 flags across Delhi, of a deshbhakti curriculum, to instill a patriotic fervour among citizens,” he added.
“Now every decision will be implemented at the mercy of the LG,” he added. “Thus, the Party has decided to protest against the Central government’s decision to introduce a Bill that renders an elected government powerless. All MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party, all Ministers, along with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be present at Jantar Mantar on 17 March from 2PM onwards to register their protest against an undemocratic decision being taken by the BJP-ruled Central government.”
